Finding Success as a Tax Law Practitioner
“The sense of community in the LLM program is amazing. Every professor at Loyola Law School is invested in student success, both during the program and in practice,” shares Victoria Lee ’15, an alumna of Loyola’s Tax LLM program.
Lee was initially interested in criminal law. Then she took partnership tax -- it turned out to be a favorite class, and the experience ultimately led her to wanting to practice tax law.
“The instruction I received was phenomenal. Somehow my professor had the ability to help me understand what is arguably the most complex subject in tax. At that point, I knew tax law was for me and Loyola had the tools necessary for my development as a successful tax practitioner.”
Lee continued in the Tax LLM program, while simultaneously working for an Estate Planning law firm, where she was responsible for converting complex trusts into simple trusts and providing tax consultation for non-profits and business start-ups.
Now working as a tax controversy associate, Lee is in charge of audit representation, contesting tax assessments, and resolving compliance issues, subjects that frequently cover multiple areas of tax law. Lee became familiar with these concepts through each class she took in the LLM program.
Loyola helped her in her career, as well. Lee obtained her current position with the help of another Loyola LLM alum and her professors.
“My professors became my mentors who I still contact for guidance,” says Lee. “There is a great sense of community within the program that continues even when you leave campus.”
