The Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review hosted an insightful discussion on the intricacies of entertainment law through its annual Entertainment Law Symposium on Feb. 23. This year’s theme of “Protecting and Advocating for Creativity” featured a specific focus on cutting-edge topics in music, talent representation, and intellectual property.
The first panel, moderated by Emma Gallagher, delved into the art of representing talent and the crucial aspects of building and protecting an artist's brand. Mariah Comer and Lindsay Arrington, partners at LaPolt Law, P.C., captivated the audience with their valuable insights and experience negotiating deals for artists like Cardi B, 21 Savage, Mary J. Blige, and Deadmau5. They emphasized the importance of not only advocating for clients on a deal basis, but also advocating for artists as a whole by championing policy reform in Washington, DC.
The discussion continued with the second panel, moderated by Olivia Finlayson, exploring the delicate balance between profits and protection in maximizing a creator's brand. Ashley Fogerty, the SVP and head of business affairs for Bravado (UMG) and Kia Kamran P.C., provided thoughtful anecdotes and advice. They enriched the conversation with their expertise on finding their niche within the rapidly changing industry and the importance of staying curious about new technology like artificial intelligence.
To wrap up the event, the keynote conversation with Amy Siegel '05, moderated by Mehrin Saleem, offered attendees fantastic insights into the path an LLS graduate may take from graduating to becoming co-head of O’Melveny’s Entertainment, Sports, and Media Industry Group. Siegel shared her journey and provided significant guidance on how incoming attorneys, especially women, can position themselves for success in a demanding industry.
It was a vibrant, eventful day of learning, networking, and inspiration. Stay tuned for future events as we continue to provide opportunities for growth and connection within the entertainment law community.
