Republican Party Paying Donald Trump's Legal Bills Is More Proof He Owns The GOP

The Republican National Committee is paying for former President Donald Trump’s personal legal bills, which is legal, politically savvy and deeply informative about the future of the Republican Party. The RNC is not spending this up to $1.6 million on competitive federal or state races. It is not spending this money to push policy proposals. It is spending this money to pay for lawyers that Trump had to hire to defend himself in criminal and civil fraud investigations that do not relate to his time as president.

With California Losing Congressional Seat, New Map Could Play Big Role In Who Controls Congress

"When it comes to Congress, every congressional district has to have an equal population. They have to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act. That means making sure that you're not diluting racial power, racial voting power. People on both sides are not particularly thrilled," said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School. "There are a lot of different interest groups that are not particularly thrilled and that frankly is as it should be."

SUPREME COURT TO HEAR CASES THAT WILL BEAR ON BIDEN'S WORKPLACE VACCINE ORDERS

A week into the new year, the Supreme Court will hear two cases that will bear heavily on President Biden's ability to enforce his orders on COVID vaccines in the workplace. To help us understand what the justices will be deciding and what the implications could be, I'm joined by Jessica Levinson. She's a law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and host of the "Passing Judgment" podcast. Welcome to the program.

MANCHIN'S BUILD BACK BETTER OPPOSITION COULD BADLY HURT AMERICA'S WORKING WOMEN

Failure to pass President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan will be a failure for women, particularly those who are poor or working class. The plan, which is at the top of Biden’s legislative wish list, is a $1.8 trillion initiative to strengthen this country’s safety net and address our climate crisis. The plan would, among other things, provide free preschool for 3- and 4-years-olds, fund child care, paid family leave, a child tax credit, care for elderly and disabled people, rebates and tax credits to promote clean energy, and an expanded Medicare program.

LAW SCHOOL PROFESSOR DISCUSSES CA LAW CHALLENGES TO U.S. SUPREME COURT

Loyola Law School’s Jessica Levinson joined Inside California Politics this week to talk about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s gun law proposal and why it will likely not get far if it ever makes it to the Supreme Court.

“In the end, I don’t think this court allows California to move forward with the current proposal,” Levinson said.

Levinson also gives insight on whether more challenges from states will happen and how the Supreme Court may respond.

ELIZABETH HOLMES TRIAL: CLOSING ARGUMENTS BEGIN

As Laurie Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School and former federal prosecutor, previously told CNN Business, the case may come down to Holmes' credibility as a witness and defendant: "This case is very much about who is Elizabeth Holmes and how opportunistic is she that she'll say whatever the moment requires her to say."

GHISLAINE MAXWELL'S LAWYERS TO FOCUS HER DEFENSE ON 'MEMORY, MANIPULATION AND MONEY'

The fund considered whether a claimant's assertions matched up with any law enforcement findings, but it is a "stretch" to say that cooperating enhanced the women's claims, said Laurie Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

"There is no requirement that a victim cooperate or testify for the prosecution," said Levenson, who reviewed the fund's protocol at Reuters' request.

PRO-GUN ACTIVISTS SLAM NEWSOM ON PLEDGE TO MODEL ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN ON TEXAS ABORTION LAW

"I think what Gov. Newsom is trying to project out is, 'Well, if the way to make sure that we can insulate our laws from a federal court overturning them is to say, OK, it's going to be a private actor, not the state that enforces it, then I'm going to go ahead and do that.' So, is this is a political move? Absolutely. Is it a legal move? Absolutely. It's a little bit of both," said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

BIDEN USED THE SUPREME COURT COMMISSION TO GIVE THE APPEARANCE OF CARING ABOUT REFORM

At the moment when we most need genuine, structural changes to the Supreme Court, we won’t get them. This is a court now facing serious questions regarding its integrity and, specifically, the way its members are appointed. After February 2016, when Justice Antonin Scalia died, then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed not to give President Barack Obama’s choice to fill that seat, now-Attorney General Merrick Garland, a hearing.

TEXAS ABORTION PROVIDERS JUST WON A CASE. HERE'S WHY IT'S NOT TIME TO CELEBRATE

The Supreme Court on Friday handed down a big decision in a case involving a challenge to Texas’ restrictive abortion law. But its decision does not directly address the constitutionality of restrictions on abortions. Instead, this decision is about who can sue and be sued to stop Texas’ law from being in effect.

TRUMP'S JAN. 6 PRIVILEGE ARGUMENT JUST GOT LAUGHED OUT OF COURT — AGAIN

The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C., has (correctly) denied former President Donald Trump’s attempt to test the boundaries of his own power to the detriment of the power of the executive and legislative branches. The ruling comes after Trump sued to prevent the National Archives from turning over White House documents related to the insurrection on Jan. 6 to a House select committee investigating it.

LAPD UNION ACCUSES COMMISSIONER SALIMPOUR OF ETHICS VIOLATION

“Do you see a conflict of interest?” said Jessica Levinson, professor at Loyola Law School. “I see a potential conflict of interest here.”

Levinson, who was once on the L.A. Ethics Commission added that the ethics code says city officials cannot attempt to use their official positions to influence city decisions when they know they have a financial interest.

SCOTT PETERSON TO BE RE-SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR MURDERING PREGNANT WIFE

Peterson was originally sent to Death Row following his conviction, and he sat there until the California Supreme Court tossed the sentence last year. The justices ruled a pair of jurors who were willing to impose the death penalty, but personally objected to it, were improperly dismissed.

"They said that the way that the jurors were selected was prejudicial to Peterson," Loyola Law School Professor Laurie Levenson told KCBS Radio.

REP. NUNES TO RETIRE AND WORK FOR TRUMP’S NEW SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANY

“This decision makes sense for him because he’s been a Trump loyalist for a long time and he’s been somebody who has talked about social media for a long time,” said Loyola Law School professor Jessica Levinson. “Of course, the irony here is that he sued social media companies a number of times and the irony is that he will now be representing one.”

JUDGE ORDERS RPV MURDERER TO FACE HIS VICTIM'S FAMILY

"We believe he should be prosecuted in juvenile court," said Berumen's attorney, who leads the Center for Juvenile Law & Policy at Loyola Law School and said his client has done "incredible work" with mentally ill inmates while behind bars.

"We asked the leadership at the D.A.'s office to follow its own policy and we got no answers."

WILL MORE STATES HOLD PARENTS LIABLE AFTER TEEN FATALLY SHOOTS STUDENTS IN MICHIGAN?

Another horrific school shooting happened just outside of Detroit last Tuesday. Four high school students were killed. What makes this case different from all the others: The parents of the alleged shooter have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Both have pleaded not guilty.

These parents helped their son buy the gun, knew he was looking for ammo, were called onto campus to talk about troubling drawings he made, and were told he needed counseling and should be taken home (but didn’t do so). That’s according to Jessica Levinson, professor at Loyola Law School.

HOW ELIZABETH HOLMES' ABUSE ALLEGATIONS COULD IMPACT HER CRIMINAL TRIAL

"It may make [jurors] second guess whether she was intentionally committing a fraud," said Laurie Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School and former federal prosecutor. Some jurors, however, might be skeptical of her testimony. "This case is very much about who is Elizabeth Holmes and how opportunistic is she that she'll say whatever the moment requires her to say."
