Master of Tax Law

A Degree in Tax Law for Non-Lawyers

Our new Master of Tax Law (MT) program makes the same rigorous tax law training available to non-lawyers on-ground and in a flexible online format. In this regard, it is different from most other MT programs. Our courses are taught by tax lawyers, using law texts and intensive problem-based law teaching techniques. Our goal is to give non-lawyers the tools they need to engage in tax research, planning, and dispute resolution at the highest levels.

Facts That Matter

Highly selective

Our program is one of the most selective in the United States. Our 2014 entering class reported an average GMAT (no waivers) of 730. We seek applicants with strong accounting, finance or economics backgrounds and strong standardized test scores (i.e., GMAT, GRE, LSAT, SAT, or ACT ).

Small classes

The average class size in our advanced tax law courses is currently 12 students. This allows us to offer rigorous, interactive, personalized, problem-based instruction.

Nationally recognized instructors

The quality of our student body and small class size attract some of the best advanced tax law instructors in the United States; most are nationally recognized experts in their fields.

Flexible Program Options

Students may choose to attend classes on campus or fully online. For working professionals, a complete selection of advanced tax electives is offered in the evening.

CPA licensure

Although not limited to accountants, our MT program is intended to allow accounting students to satisfy California’s “fifth year” requirements for CPA licensure. Because undergraduate accounting programs vary greatly, students should visit the California Board of Accountancy to determine whether our program will allow them to complete their requirements for California licensure.

Master of Science in Accounting

For students interested in a broader range of post-baccalaureate tax and accounting courses, a Master of Science in Accounting program is offered by the College of Business Administration.
