With the support of a $1 million grant from the Everychild Foundation, in 2017 the Center for Juvenile Law and Policy launched its three-year Integrated Legal and Education Advocacy Project to provide holistic juvenile justice, education, and social work advocacy to Los Angeles “crossover children” – children involved in both the dependency and juvenile justice court systems who are especially vulnerable to the “school-to-prison pipeline.”
On March 11-12, education, juvenile justice and dependency advocates from across Los Angeles County and the nation gathered to discuss lessons learned over the course of the project and obstacles still to be overcome in direct client service and policy advocacy. Given the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and its longterm impacts on crossover youth, the symposium focused on this unique historical moment and its opportunities for systemic change.
The goal: to collaborate on actionable strategies for advancing holistic, integrated advocacy for crossover youth as a gold standard and working collectively across the county to change systems that may hold these youth back from reaching their full potential.
