Library Services for Law School Alumni

Library Check-out Privileges

Alumni have check-out privileges for certain library materials. To check materials out, you must first create a Library account.  Please bring a photo ID to the Circulation Desk, and a staff member will be happy to assist you.

Loan periods are as follows:

  • Monographs (single-volume treatises): 14 days.
  • Reserve material: 2 hours.
  • Audio-visual material: 2 days.

Materials may be renewed by phone, in-person or online without limit, unless another user has asked for an item to be recalled.  Renewal periods are for the same amount of time as the item’s original circulation period.  Materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk.  Alumni do not have borrowing privileges through the Interlibrary Loan Department.

Electronic Resources

Alumni have on-campus access to IP authenticated electronic resources that the Rains library subscribes to (including BNA, Hein Online, LegalTrac, CCH Intelliconnect, and RIA Checkpoint).  Alumni do not have access to password protected databases (such as Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, etc.) or remote access to electronic resources licensed for currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff.  The library has licensed the HeinOnline Law Journal Library specifically for alumni.  Alumni can access this resource via Loyola Connect.  Log in to Loyola Connect from the Alumni website.  A list of online resources accessible to alumni on-campus is available on the Research Databases page, or by searching the Library catalog.

Ask a Reference Librarian

The Rains Library has a team of experienced reference librarians available to help identify relevant resources and suggest research avenues.  Reference librarians are available at the Reference Desk, by email, or by phone (213.736.1177).

Legal Research Guides

The librarians at the Rains library have created online research guides to Library resources that highlight specific resources on a variety of legal subjects.
