Seth Aronson '81

Partner, O'Melveny & Myers LLP

Seth Aronson runs the Los Angeles office of O'Melveny & Myers LLP, the oldest and largest law firm in Los Angeles, known for its strength in litigation and corporate law. Aronson also chairs the firm's Securities Litigation practice group, defending corporations in securities class actions, shareholder derivative actions, unfair competition and consumer class actions.

Aronson offers this advice to law students about to enter the job market: "Having the right attitude makes all the difference."  He says that to succeed, grads will have to be diligent, show leadership, civility and professionalism.

Time management is also a priority.  "Part of being a successful lawyer these days requires that you really have to immerse yourself in the practice of law and find an area that you love doing.  You should also enjoy your outside activities, but in a way that is compatible with your practice.  The trick is to do it in a way that allows you to draw on those outside activities in your practice.  Even spending time with your family can give you fresh ideas for your law practice.  Try your legal arguments on your spouse and children -- if you can't explain it to them, you will have a difficult time explaining it to a judge or jury."
