The Chapel of the Advocate is open to students of all faiths for prayer and meditation, and services are scheduled regularly during the academic year. Standing tall in front of the chapel is Gehry’s bell-less bell tower constructed of wood and glass. Behind it is the chapel’s entrance. It is necessary to descend from ground level to enter the chapel, which is sunken into the ground, not unlike the ruins of an old European church.
“Looking through the glass, you don’t see the altar and seats but see a wall, painted Gehry’s favored pale jade green. You must enter to see the full space, and when you do, you first smell the wood and see the sheets of pristine plywood and unfinished joists arranged with simple beauty. It proves that the look of raw construction can be truly elegant.”
